About the project
Sarairanjan block is located in the central part of Samastipur district in Bihar. The agro-based economy is largely dominated by upper-caste landowners, while landless communities depend on daily wage labor. Many children who drop out of school begin working alongside their parents in nearby agricultural fields owned by landlords to support their families. Migration among boys often begins as early as the age of 14, increasing their vulnerability to child labor. The community also faces significant gender disparity, with girls experiencing discrimination that frequently leads to early and forced marriages.
Making a difference
CRY America’s Project JJBVK works towards the enrolment and retention of children in school. Key activities under the project include identifying children aged 3–6 years who are not enrolled in Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) centers and initiating their enrolment, conducting home visits to motivate children aged 6–18 years to continue their education (including online learning), and promoting awareness on reducing child labor and child marriage by strengthening support mechanisms and forming Children’s and Adolescent Collectives.
The way forward
● Ensure 948 children aged 3–6 years regularly attend preschool education
● Ensure 2,887 children are retained in schools
● Ensure 500 children aged 6–18 years regularly access learning support
● Continue educational support for 60 girls from Grades 7 to 10
● Sensitize 25 Child Protection Committees to reduce instances of child labor and child marriage
● Withdraw 55 child laborers from work
● Prevent 80 child marriages in the intervention area
● Organize 9 health check-up camps in collaboration with government health centers
● Refer 5 severely underweight (SUW) children to the Nutritional Rehabilitation Center (NRC)
